Behind the Scenes: How MGP Caliper Covers Are Made
When people think of brake caliper covers, they think of color, branding, and bold upgrades. But few realize the detail, precision, and teamwork that goes into each one before it ends up on your vehicle.
At MGP Caliper Covers, we do more than manufacture caliper covers; we hand-build them from start to finish right here in the USA. Every part of the process involves a human touch, an expert eye, and a lot of pride. This is a closer look at the people and processes behind our covers.
From Raw Aluminum to Finished Product
The production process for each MGP caliper cover can include up to 10 steps and these are 8 key stages before they are ready to ship:
- Forming
- Engraving
- Welding
- Powder Coating or Painting
- Filling
- Curing
- Inspection
- Packaging
Depending on complexity and daily volume, the process takes between 5 to 10 days. Each cover is inspected and refined at every stage.
“Each piece is hand crafted, and we know it’s going on someone’s car. That means something to us.”
Forming, Engraving, and Welding: Precision at the Core
It starts with forming; raw aluminum is shaped to perfectly fit the brake calipers of your vehicle. The forming step requires the most precision: if the bend is off by even a small margin, the fitment can fail.
Engraving comes next. Whether it’s a licensed logo or custom text, each engraving is machine-calibrated and visually inspected to ensure crisp lines and sharp detail.
Each bracket is welded by hand, then fit-checked against detailed specifications. If it doesn’t meet specs, it’s redone.
Powder Coating: The Signature MGP Finish
Powder coating is what gives MGP caliper covers their bold, durable look. It’s not just for style; it’s engineered for performance.
- Protects against corrosion
- Withstands high heat
- Maintains sharp, vibrant color
Colored powder is applied in a dedicated booth, then baked to cure it. Some of the most stunning images of our production floor come from this step where rows of covers hang like artwork.
Paint Fill & Curing: Where Detail Shines
Every engraved logo or design is paint-filled by hand, one cover at a time. Depending on the complexity of the logo or design each one can take 5 to 10 minutes.
“This stage of the process requires patience and skill. Even a small mistake is visible. Good lighting and a steady hand are also essential.”
Once filled, covers go onto a curing rack where they’re heat-treated to seal the design and prepare them for real-world use. Timing and temperature must be exact to prevent soft spots or defects.
Inspection & Packaging: The Final Layer of Care
When a cover passes inspection, it’s carefully wrapped, each one in its own protective bag, with bubble wrap and tight packing to prevent movement. Why so much care?
“Packing isn’t just about boxing up the covers, it’s about protecting all the craftsmanship and preparing the covers for the shipping and handling they’ll endure.”
We’ve learned over time: careful packing means fewer returns and happier customers. Feedback often praises how our fine packaging reflects the quality of the product before it’s installed.
Made by Real People, Built for Enthusiasts
Behind every set of MGP Caliper Covers is a team of skilled creators, some of whom have been with the company for over a decade. Moms, dads, artists, engineers…people who bring pride to every phase of the process.
“Quality means double-checking everything, never assuming anything, and delivering something we’d be proud to install on our own car.”
That mindset is what separates MGP Caliper Covers from mass-produced knockoffs. Every set is made by real people, with high standards, for enthusiastic vehicle owners who take pride in their ride and want the very best.
